Ashmead School

Ashmead provides its children with two everlasting things, one is roots, the other wings.

Week 10

We made a fire!

We were incredibly lucky to be allowed to make a fire in the forest school. We went outside last Monday.

First, we had to make sure we filled a jug of water to the top in case of emergencies.

Second, we had to sweep the area so that the fire would be made in a safer place.

Then, we collected sticks, bark and cotton wool and we angled them into a triangular shape.

After that, an adult scraped flint and steel roughly so it could create a spark. The adult had to direct the spark onto the cotton wool so that it could catch alight.

Soon after, we watched the fire crackle and burn. The adult put more leaves on to act as fuel for the fire.

Lastly, we poured the water slowly onto the fire to ensure it didn't spread.
