Hello and welcome to the Year 4/5 page!
We hope you all had a lovely summer holiday and are ready and raring to go for our new school year! It has been lovely welcoming all the children back in to school and seeing so many smiling faces. We have settled down into our new classrooms, got to know our new timetables and have started exploring our new topic –‘Where the poppies now grow’. All the teachers have been amazed at how excited the children are to be learning about the war and have been blown away by the amount of information some of them already know! We can’t wait to see some of the fantastic work they produce this term...
ASHMEAD EXPERIENCES THE BLITZ
On Friday 4th December, the Year 4 and 5 pupils had the experience of an air raid siren going off at the end of their playtime! They first heard the siren as they were lining up ready to go inside for Maths. Teachers then lead them back into the building, where they found their classrooms had been ruined by a near-by blast. They were then encouraged to take shelter underneath the tables until the safe signal was sounded! Mr Stocks (Ashmead’s very own ARP warden) patrolled the corridor to ensure every class was adhering to the blackout rules of WWII. Once Mr Pearse had let the children know it was safe, Mrs Hearn (Our first response WWII nurse) came and attended to any casualties in the classrooms.
The children really enjoyed this experience and were able to try out first-hand the Blitz precautions that they have been learning about in History lessons. They are now enjoying writing newspapers about the time that Ashmead went through the Blitz!
